We are delighted that one of our art tutors and assessor, Linda Khatir, has been achieving so much success. Check out her work and the various activities she is currently involved in here. In March this year, she was awarded a research fellowship by the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds and spent two weeks in the libraries and archives collecting information on British Constructivism – a little known strand within the history of abstract art (prominent artists include Gillian Wise, Anthony Hill and Jeffrey Steele). Her stay was organised to coincide with the exhibition ‘Construction and its Shadow’ (curated by Andrew Bick) at Leeds City Art Gallery. The institute then invited Linda back to Leeds in May to give a paper at the accompanying conference alongside prominent artists, historians and writers. (An audio transcript of the conference is due to be published on the HMI website later in the year).

Soon afterwards Linda was delighted to be selected as joint artist-in-residence by the School of Arts Institute Chicago, USA. In September this year she will travel with another artist, Michele Whiting, to Oxbow, SAIC’s summer retreat on the banks of Lake Michigan. The residency was been awarded on the strength of her joint proposal to engage in individual and shared approaches to space and place through combinations of drawing, photography and moving image. The three week stay at Oxbow gives the opportunity to explore, not only the unfamiliar geographical environment of 150 acres of forests, lakes and sand dunes, but also the unfamiliar intellectual environment of a truly collaborative and cross-disciplinary art practice.

Linda also has an essay in the forthcoming publication of the book ‘Painting with Architecture in Mind. Essays on Painting and Architecture’, (Wunderkammer press, Bath Spa university) which brings together artists and writers who address the question of painting in relation to its architectural frame or spaces of display. They consider ways in which thinking about painting (its modes of expression and forms of expansion) challenges the architecturalised environment. (The book is due to be published around September). • It’s great to hear that the OCA staff are achieving in their own right, it gives a sense of “authority” to what’s being done behind the scenes that many of us will be unaware of. I’m also enjoying reading about the different arts with greater regularity: as a photographer I obviously take part in the photography discussions, but there’s so much more to OCA than photography. Keep it coming.

  • Fantastic news and congratulations Linda for all your hard work. So envious but an inspiration to us all. Love the Grey Room, reminds me of so many things…like an uncluttered ‘Solie 17’ (Edward Kline) but then Hector Guimard or Victor Horta.

  • Congratulations Linda on all the avenues opening up. Cross-disciplinary art is a long way from where I can currently and comfortably understand it but wishing you all the best on your journey

  • Well done, Linda – I am delighted that your creative gifts are being recognised in a way that lets you use them to the full. Your work is inspiring. Seeing the Robinson installation I longed to be there in the space so I could experience the work in the round.
Looking forward to seeing the work that emerges from your residency, that sounds exciting. We are so lucky that you are on the OCA tutorial team.

  • Hi Linda, I think I saw one of your pieces at the Bath Fringe XYZ exhibition, Red Cloud? it definitely caught my eye, I like the surreal.

    • Hi Simon, yes that was me in Bath! glad you enjoyed it. Thank you all for your comments. Will try to set up a blog during the residency in the USA
