We recently hosted a study visit at the Arnolfini in Bristol to look at the work of Richard Long. Inspired by the artist OCA student Abi Latham got in touch to share her own land art.

Abi is currently studying the Creative Arts Today unit and made these pieces as part of the photography section. Living on the Scilly Isles she could not but take advantage of the backdrop on her doorstep. As the season changes she allows nature to dictate the colour palette in her work. She hopes to make some larger scale pieces in the future and develop and explore her ideas further.

I particularly like the evanescent nature of using driftwood, glass and stones which have been washed ashore and will, in time, be swept away again. It may be quiet interesting for Abi to make a time-lapse video of her piece and further explore nature in art, control and transience.

I asked Abi how she’s found this course as a whole,

“I liked the idea of being able to start studying and then decide which direction to take. It’s been interesting and has definitely inspired me to try out new things. I enjoyed researching different artists and finding out what techniques they use.

The course has also given me new ideas about how to use photography to create art. I think my research skills have also improved and I am more able to compare the work of  artists. I also have a better understanding of some of the concepts behind art and why it was made in the first place.”
