OCA tutor and assessor Majella Clancy looks at the work of ‘Painting 2 – Exploring Concepts’ student Jocelyn Harwood. She discusses how Jocelyn uses her sketchbook to experiment and explore and then selects drawings to develop further. She makes drawings from drawings. She lets the marks and tonalities dictate how the composition is read. She just goes with it rather than pre-determining the image.

Thank you to Majella, and Jocelyn for showing this way of working. It’s helpful to have the concept of “drawing from drawing” demonstrated so clearly and to great effect. And the exploratory use of sketchbooks is something I really need to learn to do. I’m still very tentative in how I use mine, and am almost embarrassed about my efforts. Jocelyn’s are confident, and very neat. each page seems to be a work in its own right, which is a long shot from the way I’m doing things. But I suppose it’s whatever works for each of us at the time.

Drawing from drawing is an interesting process potentially. It is a good way of editing and getting to the important bits. Drawing from photographs and then using the drawing for a painting is also a useful alternative to painting from photographs.
