Transmitting Andy Warhol
Join Gerald Deslandes on the 24 January at 11am at Tate Liverpool where we will visit Transmitting Andy Warhol.
The exhibition includes Warhol’s iconic Marilyn series alongside key international loans. It explores his experimentation with a range of media from painting and sculpture to photography and film. At the same time it raises questions about Warhol’s relationship with other contemporary artists who were rejecting authorship through geometric abstraction and minimalist works.
The study day will also include a visit to A Needle Walks into a Haystack, a display of works from the permanent collection. The works on display allude to the central role of domestic space in our lives and its representation as a subject matter for artists. It includes pieces by Susan Hiller, Sherrie Levine, Patrick Caulfield and Naum Gabo. As a foil to Andy Warhol’s sleek analyses of modern life, it makes what Tate Liverpool rightly calls ‘a must see for sure.’

I was there on Saturday – well worth the visit even if it is a little small compared to some that I’ve been too. Well, I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway.
Also, just around the corner is Open Eye with Heinecken’s polaroids – interesting if you’re looking at appropriation art.
should’ve checked before I typed – Heineken will be finished a week or two before the visit…
… but there will probably be something else at Open Eye worthwhile seeing- have requested a place because although a photography student, Warhol is an artist I would like to better understand.
Should be an interesting group I’m studying textiles.
