Join OCA’s Andy Glover and Chris Lawry on Saturday 2 April 2016 between 9.30am and 5pm for a composition workshop at MAC Birmingham. The day will consist of advice and discussion on writing for Voices, and will feature recordings and feedback of student compositions for mezzo soprano.
Students are welcome to attend just as observers but are also encouraged to submit a short piece (up to 4min) for consideration to be recorded and discussed. The day will also be a chance to meet up and network with fellow students and OCA staff, plus your OCASA music representative Martin Richardson will also be available to speak to.
Due to room restrictions, spaces will be extremely limited for this event and allocated on a first come first served basis. Places are free to OCA students. To book your place, and to receive further information, email enquiries@oca.ac.uk as soon as possible, stating whether you would like to attend as either an observer or composer.
Your student association, OCASA, has worked with tutors and performers to provide an additional exciting aspect to this workshop. Although attending composers will have their pieces recorded in advance OCASA has helped expand on this in several ways:
1) Students that are unable to attend are also welcome to submit pieces for recording and feedback.
2) All students will be able to use their recordings for not only private study and development, but also online, perhaps to share with friends and family or to use in networking or their own websites.*
*Terms and conditions are provided to participants and also available on request.
This is a fantastic opportunity, widening accessibility and broadening outcomes, so many thanks to OCASA for helping pioneer such a scheme for students. Those wishing to receive further information, and to submit a piece should also register by email to enquiries@oca.ac.uk as soon as possible, stating that you would like to submit a piece as a non-attending student.
Guidelines for Composers
Composers are invited to write a piece for Solo Voice (Mezzo Soprano) with or without piano accompaniment. There are a selection of texts that students must choose from to use. These will be provided with further details after registering for the workshop.
Scores should be sent, as a Sibelius file (or PDF), no later than the 31st January 2016. The pieces will be recorded by professional singer Samantha Joy and tutor Chris Lawry. Look out for a series of WeAreOCA blog posts to follow shortly which should help you research and write your compositions. Any queries, please email.
