The idea that pointing your camera at things that are not part of your experience can only be tourism is also problematic – if you have privilege why not use that to highlight those less fortunate?

This blogpost is an attempt to pass on some of what I’ve learned about drawing in a gallery. It’s not the only way to go about it, and it isn’t for everyone, but I hope that after reading it you feel that it might be something you want to try.
At the end of April twelve students from seven different countries and two OCA bodies met in Copenhagen for a weekend to look at art and make connections.
Relative Poverty would be stories – based in fact, as we understand documentaries to be – and the intent was overt; to show the lives lived in as much detail as it takes to overcome the naysayers. A tall order I know.
As part of the OCA’s charitable purpose, each year our Learner Support Scheme helps new and existing students with a low household income to access our courses.
This is in the form of partial bursaries towards the course fees, dependant on household income. Applicants must not be eligible for other sources of funding, such as Student Finance.
OCA tutor Andrew Conroy will be leading the OCA-North group’s first get together on the 2 June in Leeds at the Old Red Bus Station.

This week it’s Mental Health Awareness week, and the focus for 2018 is on stress.
This hangout is open to all students at all levels who wish to actively engage with their peers in the discussion of various topics/ questions and a place to seek feedback on work in progress whether in its infancy or almost complete. The experience adds an additional layer of learning, feedback and reflective practice, a valuable opportunity to gain insight into other students thoughts, ideas and working practice.
“But the idea of how or why women feel invisible interests me. Is it driven by consumerism that glorifies youth and perfection? Is it that, with age, we are less sexually attractive? Or is it that one really does become invisible with age? I wanted to try to represent this invisibility.”
