Radio Mifumi

OCA Creative Writing Course Leader Jane Rogers is off to Uganda next week. She will be working with the Director of the charity Mifumi, Atuki Turner to get some local Ugandan writers together to develop a pilot for a radio soap opera which could be broadcast in the Tororo area, and which would aim to educate and inform about the social issues the charity is addressing, through lively and character-driven storylines. Think of the ‘The Archers’ as a model, or the highly successful Nigerian radio soap, ‘Story story.’
Drawing on her own experience of writing for radio, Jane will help storyline and develop a pilot series of 10 x 15 minute scripts, with a group of 5 writers. The aim would be to fully script and record the pilot, in English and in a local language, and if it is successful when broadcast, then the team of writers would have the skills to write a further series.
Mifumi supports the needs of and promotes protection for women and children affected by domestic violence and abuse, as well as bride price violations. you can find out more about them on their website.
