Fees for 2011/12

At the start of our new academic year on 1 July the OCA will be increasing its fees to reflect the increase in costs we have experienced over the last 12 months. As an educational charity the OCA trustees have kept the level 1 fee increase to the absolute minimum to be consistent with our charitable purpose which is about widening access to arts education.
The full details are as follows:
Enrolling on single courses
For level 1 (40 credit) open learning courses the price will increase from £595 to £625.
For level 2 and level 3 (60 credit) open learning courses the price will increase from £695 to £745.
Enrolling for a course level
The 5% discount for these multiple enrolments is retained:
Level 1 – (3 x 40 credit courses, 120 credits) £1780
Levels 2 and 3 – (2 x 60 credit courses, 120 credits) £1415
Face to face tuition
The face to face supplement remains unchanged at £50 per course.
Payment by instalments
There is a £35 administration fee for students wishing to pay by instalments. For students on level 1 courses the deposit will be £285 with five monthly instalments of £75, for level 2 and 3 courses the deposit will be £330 with six monthly instalments of £75. The face to face supplement, where applicable, is paid with the deposit.
Overseas students
The course supplements for students studying outside the UK will be £100 for students in Europe and £150 for students outside of Europe.
MA Fees
Fees for the MA in Fine Art will be announced in July 2011.
While any fee increase is regrettable, we are pleased that we have managed to keep the full BA(Hons) degree fees below £5,000 (The cost is £4,855 for those enrolling one course at a time and £4,610 for those enrolling by level).
As in recent years, we are announcing this change a month before it takes effect. Students who wish to enrol at the current fee levels have until 4pm on 30 June to do so.

  • Although I can see this might be an unfortunate problem for some, it’s still an absolute bargain compared to bricks and mortar fees! Just over half the cost of a single year for a full degree…

  • With the rise in fees soon – could the OCA please look into the ILA grant for scottish students as a matter of some urgency?
The grant is provided for numerous other photography courses and also the T189 through the Open University.

    • Hi Nicola
I am sorry but I can’t really give you any comfort on this issue. The Scottish Government have decided that ILAs can only be used with providers who have an office in Scotland. The OU is much larger than the OCA and have a regional office based in Scotland. We do not and could not justify one. Unless the Scottish Government change their policy I do not see any prospect of ILA grants for OCA courses.

      • Gareth, thank you for the reply. That’s dissapointing but I realise thats not something the OCA can resolve.
As previously said the fees are still good value when compared to other institutions.

    • There are no excess charges Christine, the fees quoted above cover the materials, tuition and assessment.
There are two reasons non-UK based student are charged a supplement.
      1. On average, they cost us more – for example in getting course materials to the student
      2. The OCA receives a very small amount of public money which is specifically to subsidise UK and EU students
      I hope this helps

  • By enrolling in June, are we able to take advantage of instalment payment, or do we have to pay upfront?

  • I’m not expecting you will know this yet but… any idea what will be happening next year? 2012/2013? This is when the vast majority of universities will start charging £9000 a year. Will this have a big impact on the OCA? Or will it’s charity funding still keep the fees down?

    • Hi Sarah
You are right that it is too early for us to fix our 2012/13 prices, but we are not expecting the HE funding changes to have a big impact on the OCA. The reasons are explained in a post I wrote last October which is is here. As an educational charity we are completely committed to providing high quality education at the lowest possible fee levels.
      I hope this reassures
      Gareth

  • Getting a folder sent overseas wouldn’t cost 150 pounds, and if assessments are done online, there are no extra costs involved. Currently though, we have to (opt) to) pay an extra 120 pounds for return of materials after the final assessment. So, can I just confirm that the overseas fee includes the return of assessment materials?

    • That’s right Christine, the overseas fee includes the return of assessment materials. This was something we simplified in our fee structure last July.

  • Hi! Being unemployed, I cannot afford to pay myself for the full degree I would like to enrol for.
I have received application forms from OCA for enrolment and funding support for starting BA Creative Arts but it is for 2010/2011 and not 2011/2012! I need the more up to date forms really!
I have also got a Certificate of HE or transcript of cat points from earlier study I had a Student Loan then, will this affect me getting any funding support? Please email me or call me if possible about this?
    Thanks.
Without the financial support I cannot study further with OCA at all!
    Polly

      • Good advice from Dewald. I have edited your comment Polly to protect some of your personal information and Woody Whittick, our Head of Learner Support will be in touch with your directly.
