What do you get if you mix parents, carers, artists, teachers, retirees, and those whose career took them down a different path to their artistic leanings? No, there’s no punchline – our student body is made up of a diverse student community from around the world and all find their place within OCA.
Students are linked up with others on their current unit via an email group, giving access to a wealth of shared practice, ideas and cake. Okay, maybe not the cake.
Cast the net wider and you’ll find subject specific areas of the forums, and study events tailored to specific subjects. “First year painter seeks critical third year friend for support, constructive critique and cake”. Sorry, still no cake.
Wider still, as part of the larger OCA body, students can interact through the student forums and at regional events and study visits with people just down the road, or on the other side of the world, working in a wide range of media. First year poetry students having discussions with final year photographers about imagery, foundations drawing students talking to textiles degree students about sketchbook work. I like to think the study events would actually involve cake too. Mine’s a brownie if anyone’s ordering.
Students are forming their own artistic networks and working collaboratively with others. Our MA Fine Art is a true example of this, with students from all over the world studying together and culminating in an exhibition, which is entirely arranged amongst themselves – some great employability skills!
With our birthday having just been, we hosted a fantastic exhibition called Showcase down in London (sadly no cake again) where students came together to present their work; this could be you too, but remember to bring the cake this time.
