Let's get intertextual…

Certain terms are almost guaranteed to cause a reaction in the OCA student forums and in that list ‘Post-Modernism’ is pretty near the top. So the fact that an exhibition this autumn at the V&A asks ‘What does Postmodernism mean, and where did it come from?’ makes it an ideal topic for a study visit. To coincide with the main exhibition there is a smaller room of photography ‘Signs of a Struggle: Photography in the Wake of Postmodernism’
So, the study visit will take place on Saturday 29 October, starting at 11 am and I am pleased to say that Sculpture tutor Jim Unsworth, Visual Communications course leader Christian Lloyd and Photography course leader Peter Haveland are all penciled in to attend, along with Jane Horton, OCA curriculum director and myself. The study visit is free and we are expecting significant demand from students to attend. We have 15 places for photography students and 15 places for Fine Art/Visual Comms students. If demand for either area exceeds these numbers you will be entered on a reserve list and if the other list is not full one week before the visit you will be offered a place. Please note, unlike other visits no refreshments are included. To book your place, please email enquiries@oca-uk.com. Please do not put a comment below asking for a place as we can’t handle the ambiguity.

  • I got quite excited at this, then noticed the date – I’m already booked in to attend a talk by a number of photographers in Bradford (including John Davies and Ian Beesley). Never mind, I’ll try and get to the V+A some other time.
    Enjoy…

  • It looks good, I’ve just sent my email, although I’m not at all sure if I’ll be fine art or photography as i’m just in the middle of transferring courses. (I might be a bit intertextual myself)

  • This looks a really interesting exhibition. And excellent tutors’ brains to pick too. Am totally gutted that being housebound i cant attend 🙁
    And GREEN with envy! lol

  • Got my place this morning, and after what’s been written on the forum just recently I think there could be some hot and good debate here.

  • This looks like an interesting day.
No doubt there will be many photographs in the main exhibition but nothing about photography it appears. Good therefore that photography has its’ own display.
I find myself struggling to understand a lot of visual culture terminology. Recently, I read that the term “theory” can not be easily defined.
Trust there will be some light at the end of the tunnel even if it is that of a train coming towards one.

  • Gareth,
I booked my place a while ago and am looking forward to the day. Haven’t attended a study day before, so wondering what I need to do in advance. Is there ant preparatory material available? I am away and out of electronic contact for a wek from Friday, so am trying to get organised. My V&A magazine makes the exhibition sound very enticing.

  • There will be a note coming with joining instructions and recommended reading Judith – as you are going to be out of contact we will see if we can email the reading list to you earlier.

  • I have recently read a short book about post-modernism that I found helpful …
A Very Short Introduction to Post Modernism
    by Christopher Butler
It is also available on Kindle (and other ebook readers)
