Here is OCA tutor and assessor Jim Unsworth looking at some excellent figure drawings by OCA student Sue Elliott. Well done Susan!

  • I think what makes these drawings so successful is that the line looks at all the idiosyncrasies and variations of shape and direction. This is done through slowing down, taking time to look and feel the rhythms and forms. It is the opposite of generalisation. Sometimes students confuse suggestion with generalisation, but not here.

  • The mark making was a success on Sue’s work because she took time in considering the source of light. Thus making it easy for her to get the good tonal value of her drawing. Well done.

  • And as usual, I really like Jim’s commentary. He puts things simply and straightforwardly but at the same time I realise he’s making profound points.
