Study visit in Barnsley for Light and Line: a textiles exhibition

This study visit, at Barnsley Civic art gallery, will run on Wednesday 12 December. It’s is an ideal opportunity for textiles students to see the work of two developing textiles artists. OCA tutor Pat Hodson will accompany your around this small exhibition and provide an opportunity to share your experiences as a textiles student. We’ll meetup in a cafe afterwards to reflect on what we’ve seen.
Polly Binns and Anne Morrell, two leading figures in the field of art textiles , come together in an exhibition that explores the common threads uniting their practice, as well as their wider contribution to contemporary textile history.

by Polly Binns

Meeting over 30 years ago, Polly and Anne share a dedication to making, despite having very different career histories and working methods, and with a decade separating them. Both artists use stitch as structural and mark-making components in the development of their images and ideas. Polly works directly onto the material, letting the journey of the stitch flow immediately; Anne works with an idea at the beginning of the process, which then develops and changes in the making. Both artists also share a fascination with the light and texture of landscape.
This will be the first time that Polly and Anne have shown their work together and the exhibition has been developed by the artists themselves, giving them an opportunity to present themselves and their own voices, outside of a curatorial vision. There’s a good blog post about Polly’s work here.
