Join OCA tutor Jayne Taylor at the Barbican in London on the 1 September.
Vanessa Winship’s poetic gaze explores the fragile nature of our landscape and society, how memory leaves its mark on our collective and individual histories. Winship’s oeuvre captures the ‘transition between myth and the individual’, revealing deeply intimate photographs that often appear to avoid specific contexts or any immediate political significance.
The exhibition brings together an outstanding selection of more than 150 photographs, many of which have never been seen before in the UK, as well as a collection of unseen archival material. Vanessa Winship: And Time Folds is part of the Barbican’s 2018 season, The Art of Change, which explores how the arts respond to, reflect and potentially effect change in the social and political landscape.
Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing is the first UK retrospective of American photographer Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Lange was a powerful woman of unparalleled vigour and resilience. Using her camera as a political tool to shine a light on cruel injustices, Lange went on to become a founding figure of documentary photography.
While the ticket gains entry to both exhibitions, the main focus of the study visit will be viewing And Time Folds. Following this, there will be a guided discussion offering students of all levels and disciplines an opportunity for critical exchange before viewing the Dorothea Lange work independently.
Students new to study visits are particularly welcome! Research materials will be provided in the joining instructions ahead of the trip; these will also be available to any students unable to attend. Please let us know if you would like to receive them. Email studentadvice@oca.ac.uk.
Subject to interest, there will be an opportunity for an online group discussion open to all on Monday 3 September, 6pm again register your interest by emailing studentadvice@oca.ac.uk.
