A study visit to the excellent Jerwood Drawing Prize

There is going to be an opportunity to see the Jerwood Drawing Prize on tour in Birmingham on Saturday 2nd March at the Midlands Arts Centre, Canon Hill Park Birmingham (MAC) starting at the Cafe at 11.30 am followed by an additional drawing activity as a follow up from the visit with OCA tutor Doris Rohr or an extra visit to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery led by Gerald Deslandes.
The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2012 is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. Judged by an independent panel of selectors: Stephen Coppel, Curator of the Modern Collection, Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum; Kate Macfarlane, Co-Director of The Drawing Room, London; and Lisa Milroy, Artist and Head of Graduate Painting, Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, the Prize aims to explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice in the UK. 78 works from 73 artists have been selected from a submission of almost 3,000 entries. The Jerwood Drawing Prize shows the breadth and diversity of contemporary drawing in the UK and so is an excellent introduction to contemporary practices of drawing, as a self standing form of art, standing on its own feet. The practice of contemporary drawing stresses the interdisciplinary nature of drawing as a form of thinking, as conceptual practice, as artistic process and medium, and as a means of research.

I won’t be able to make it down to Birmingham so decided to look online. I can’t find images of the exhibition and wondered if anyone else had. I googled a few of the artists at random to get an idea. Perhaps it was just the bad luck of my choices, but the work I saw was all very samey- corporate, hard-edged and photo based. I would be interested to hear from anyone once they have seen the exhibition whether there is variety and a real feeling of investigation of the possibilities drawing offers.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘samey – corporate ‘ but when I saw the exhibition in London I noticed the drawing as design and the drawing as novelty aspect to the show. Drawing that comes naturally doesnt seem to get a look in.
Olivia – I’d recommend actually buying this year’s catalogue. Not expensive and good quality reproductions. And from seeing this year’s exhibition, I don’t think it could be described as ‘samey’.
I’ve signed up to go on this visit – it’s in the region I live in – and I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be very interesting to see what’s been selected – they say it was almost 3,000 submissions. Given that they’ve ended up with work by 73 artists, I’m expecting variety, though I realise I’m also going off with no idea what I’m going to see. I’m sure we’ll do some forum postings with after-thoughts.
I’ve just had the details of this study visit and plans have changed a bit! All we get now is one hour in the Jerwood exhibition! After a half hour lunch break, the itinerary heads us all off into Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery for an hour and a half at the Government Art Collection exhibition on there at the moment, which I’ve already been to see, and I don’t remember seeing any drawings there at all. The plans for some drawing activity with Doris have disappeared off the plan. So the balance and focus has changed a bit.
Apologies Jennifer, the plans had to change because of difficulties that arose in planning the drawing activity in a gallery space. I should have updated the blog post! I do hope you will still come. The visit to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will be well worth while. Even if you have already seen the world class Pre Raphaelite collection in the gallery, you’ll gain insights from the two tutors attending there, as well as at the Jerwood.
Thanks to everyone for their contribution to making this a very successful event. It was great meeting students and colleagues – chatting, exchanging ideas and putting faces to names – excellent! Hope to see you all again sometime, at another study day perhaps, or what about setting up a local support network – like the OCA association I believe operates in the Thames Valley?
Yes it was a good day. I expected the Jerwood exhibition to be good, but browsing more through the catalogue and thinking more about some of the things we looked at and talked about, I wish now I’d gone to see it before as well – it was an exhibition really warranting more than just an hour or so, wasn’t it? And looking through the catalogue I think we really only skimmed the surface.
