Andrea Lacher-Bryk

Inspired by the annotated, scientific drawings of intrepid explorers Andrea wanted to indicate how human exploitation segments our landscape by superimposing on her original drawing (the natural state) a selection of houses, streets, factories, climbing routes, walking tracks, fields, hedges, cable car, huts, lights, etc.

Carefully selecting her kit – chalk and oil pastels, ink and acrylic – she set off planning her route into the drawing and mapping her composition. Watch the journey below.

Adventure analogies aside, Andrea has created a piece that draws the viewer in and around it. It was carefully planned and every detail was considered, her use of materials complementing her subject matter. From an exercise she has something she could potentially develop and investigate further.

It is important for students to take the time to consider their compositions, plan drawings and discern what to leave in and what to leave out. Use a viewfinder and make lots of thumbnail sketches, think about your medium(s) and surface. Use the exercises as a place to to experiment and explore!
