Fancy A Weekend in Leeds?
OCASA is considering supporting a day of lectures for OCA students that would explore ten key ideas that have influenced contemporary art. Given sufficient interest, the study day would take place at the Hilton Hotel in Leeds on Saturday 10 May between 10.00 and 18.00.
Students could attend at a day rate of £50, which includes a two-course lunch and tea and coffee. Alternatively, they could choose to stay overnight on Saturday 10 May. This would include an additional three-course dinner and Sunday morning breakfast and would include the day course and come to a total of £110 per person for single occupancy or £75 per person for two people sharing a room.
The hotel is 5 minutes’ walk from Leeds railway station. It has a fitness suite and swimming pool, which is free for guests. It is also less than fifteen minutes’ walk from Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute with their stunning collections of twentieth century art. Attendees could visit these briefly at lunch time on Saturday 10 May.
Both venues do not open until 1300 on Sunday. However, if students choose to stay overnight they could visit the Hepworth in Wakefield by train on the Sunday morning – it opens at 10 and is about 30 minutes’ journey time from Leeds – and come back and see Leeds Art Gallery on the Sunday afternoon.
The talks will be given by Gerald Deslandes, an OCA tutor in art history and visual studies. He would be happy to accompany students to the Hepworth and Leeds Art Gallery if more than 10 people chose to stay overnight.
The talks relate to key ideas in the development of modernism and postmodernism since 1900 and will each include a minimum of 60 images of artists’ work. The themes and timetable is as follows:
10.00 – 10.45: Progress, the City and the Machine
11.00 – 12.00: ‘Primitivism’ and the Unconscious
(12.00 – 14.00 Lunch and an opportunity for independent visits to Leeds Art Gallery)
14.00 – 14.45 Consumerism and Language
15.00 – 16.00 Feminism and Multiculturalism
(16.00 – 16.30 Break)
16.30 – 17.30 Postmodernism and Globalisation
17.30 – 18.00 Round-up and Close
(19.00 – 20.00 Dinner for those staying overnight)
Leeds Hilton has agreed to hold rooms until the 31 January. Hence Gerald would like to know if people are interested as soon as possible. He will let the people that contact him know if the event will take place by the 10 February. For details of the lectures see Gerald’s website here. To express a firm interest in attending please leave a message on the same website here.

I’m interested!
very interested. Why leeds? Could a different location be an option?
Thanks very much for expressing an interest in the Leeds weekend earlier in the year.
This will now definitely go ahead on the 10 May. Some students will be staying over and visiting the Hepworth Gallery and Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute on the 11 May.
I am afraid that there are no plans at present to re-stage it at a different location but I am hoping to find a way to record it with OCASA’s help.
The day rate is £50, which includes lunch and there are options to book a single or double room overnight on Saturday 10 May. This would include an additional three-course dinner and Sunday morning breakfast. The price to include the day course would come to a total of £110 per person for single occupancy or £75 per person for two people sharing a room.
Please could you let me know at the email address below if you are still interested?
With thanks

Can the lectures be recorded and made available on the OCA site for those not able to attend?
Sounds like a `must’ for 3rd level students like me! Am very interested – might the hotel do a deal including the Friday night as I can’t get to Leeds in time on the Saturday?
I’m tempted!
V interested, Leeds is a good venue for me. Will have to confirm availability though
There’ll always be Leeds! I think I’ll be booking
did you sign up? If so, I’ll see you there..
I’d be interested
I would love to attend. Would I be able to attend if I am between courses?
Yes Linda. We (the OCA) and OCASA still consider you a student for up to 12 months between courses.
Yes I would love to attend.
Very difficult to analyse these lectures in the available time, so I’ve recorded my notes from the day and made a few comments.

Would be great if this type of event could be repeated regularly.
