Hockney Study day at Royal Academy

The much publicized Hockney exhibition: A Bigger Picture, has arrived and we couldn’t let it go without having a study day. Since it will be so popular we have chosen to visit it during the week. The visit is planned for Tuesday 14 February, starting at 11am. Joining us on the trip will be an OCA tutor who knows David Hockney and his studio so will give us additional insights into his work. Of interest to some (certainly me, as someone who paints on an iPad), will be that Hockney’s iPad drawings will be on display, and they have been digitally enhanced so that they can be printed on a large scale.

We’ll meet at the Royal Academy at 11am, in the forecourt of the Royal Academy, and will go in at 11.15 at the latest, with timed tickets. Entrance for OCA students is free, but we only have 15 tickets so call the OCA office to book your free place on 0800 731 2116 soon since tickets will be given on a first come first serve basis. It goes without saying that since this will be a popular event it is imperative that you do turn up if you book a ticket, otherwise you will be depriving another student of the place. Further details will be sent to you once your place is secured.

  • As much as I would love to have to opportunity to attend this study day …. as I love DH’s work *and* his relationship with photography over the years …. it would be a very personal thing and, as a photography student, I just wouldn’t feel comfortable in taking away a place from a painting/drawing artist.
I will be going to ‘A Bigger Picture’ at some point …. have a great day.

  • I would love to go on this study day, but I will hold back as I am a Friend of the RA and already have tickets for it. Can’t wait. I would not want to deprive other students of the chance to see it. Hope everyone has a great day.

  • How does one apply for this day!?
Am a photographer but interested in Hockney’s work particularly his use of video via 2 digital SLRs!!

  • I would love to join you, but unfortunately cannot make this date. I am going to the exhibition next week and again later. I look forward to seeing comments from the dat

  • Just a mention, I saw a preview of Hockney’s exhibition at the RA via the Northeast News (Tyne Tees and Border) and was greatly impressed. As he said, there were many colours that individuals didn’t see in the lanes of his native Yorkshire and wow, he did bring out some colours. By the way, I won’t be able to get to the RA.

  • There is something I don’t understand, your article is dated 6.01 and I got it on Friday 13th January, other students have answered on 7th and the 8th. How come? I’d love to go – I love Hockney and a visit at 11.00 would fit between school runs – and will try but it’s probably full now!

    • Hello. I am sorry about this misunderstanding. We publish articles on our blog all the time, and then ‘push’ out the articles via the weekender bulletin each week, but the article may well have come out some time before the bulletin goes out. The way round this is to look at weareoca regularly or subscribe to a feed from the website, in which case every time there is a new article you will receive an alert about it.

  • There is a lot in the media about Hockney at present … so much stuff and I have even bought a book of interviews with him called The Bigger Picture.
Hockney’s view on photography is very lucid (unlike some photographic critics!)

  • I can’t wait. Thank you OCA.
I’m very excited by David Hockney’s new work and feel certain that it will have a profound and far reaching influence on many artists including, those working with lens media.

  • Went yesterday. Absolutely stunning. The works are huge, the colours gorgeous, vibrant, Fauviste,life-affirming. It is like being sucked into a different world. Not at all melancholic – in fact, I and everyone I noticed, had a smile on the face – but nevertheless a reflection on the passing of time, at many levels, and also, I felt, of a kind of isolation or at least self-sufficiency. There is so much to say about this exhibition,so much to love and to wallow in, but it can be summed up, fo me as beautifuland profound. A new way of seeing.

  • I’m waiting to see if my hubby can get time off work to look after our children as it’s half term week. However, in hope of it all being fine, I’ve booked a timed ticket for 11am. I’m a Friend of RA so already have a free ticket option. In fact, I’m allowed to have a +1 for free – so when I know if I can definitely make this date, I’ll post again here to offer a free ticket to someone. However, please don’t count this as a defo until I re-post to confirm I’m coming.

  • Hi – I rang the office shortly after the study day was announced and reserved a place. The person I spoke to said I would receive an email with more details about the plan for the day but I haven’t had anything yet. Please can you let me know when that will be sent out.
    Many thanks

  • Hi there, I can definitely come and as an RA member I can bring one other adult with me. If anyone wants me to get free entry for them please do let me know. I’ll also contact the OCA office to let them know I’ll be attending so I can get a study day info pack. Thanks, Alli
