Student work uncovered – Jackie Fry

OCA has introduced prizes/awards across all its schools since the successful introduction a couple of years ago of an annual art prize for students demonstrating exceptional work and good studentship. These awards take different forms depending on the subject area. OCA art history student Jackie Fry has been the first OCA student to be awarded the art history prize. This is as a result of the excellent work she did on the course Understanding Western Art. Samples of her course work are shown here, and here is Jackie talking about studying with OCA. Look out for the livestock in her garden!

  • Well done Jackie! Credit given where due… the Pope’s palace part made me laugh! Nicely put!
I enjoyed this video, because it felt like a conversation!
Jane, you mention the livestock… but if it is the sheep, it didn’t move! It would be a very interesting (odd?) sculpture to have…

  • Lovely natural interview. Well done Jane for putting her at her ease. Beautifully shot and very peaceful quiet backdrop – I was waiting for the tup to move which made me smile. If I wasn’t already looking out for it I would have laughed out loud.
I think this is would be a good promotional video for the OCA. Everything comes across very nicely.

  • Very interesting. Well done Jackie Fry. I really like the idea of finding another student to share the course with from time to time. As she says, we all have very different points of view, and bring different experience to the task. It’s a very professional interview, completely natural and relaxed. Thank you, Josie

    • Hello Josie
I have just finished Assignment One of History of Western Art. Would be interested to hear where you are on the course.

  • Jackie and Jane, what a lovely interview
makes me wan to find a study buddy too who s going through my same course – being able to chat about ideas is so helpful.
Jackie – given your experience as an English teacher, I wonder if you’d be willing to share some advice to other students on how to write a great essay? (or even share some of your best essays as examples that we can aspire to?)
Really well done on your prize, and wishing you even more enjoyment on your net course
    Carol

  • I can see why you wanted to make such an extended interview with Jackie. She so clearly got SO much from it and her praise for OCA is so obviously genuine. And I know about that sheep: it arrived in her garden one morning coincidentally after her husband thought she needed a present.

  • Well done Jackie and jane, Interesting video.
I’m currently on that course too and had a quiet chuckle about the “choosing paintings for the pope’s palace” exercise. I too wondered about the relevance – but delved into it and learned a lot in the process.
The courses are well written and kindle the fire to find out more, even at the danger of going off on a tangent.
Wonder what your next choice of course would be…
I too like the idea of a study-buddy to be able to discuss themes.

  • Well done Jackie and what a great interview. I couldn’t agree more about having a friend doing the course at the same time. Being in Australia I didn’t think I’d be able to take advantage of this because we Aussie OCA students are few and far between but, like you, once I had told my friend Judy about the courses she was on board in a flash. It has been invaluable having her to talk things over with, we chivvy each other along, go to exhibitions together and have the phone running hot on occasion.
The best thing is that we have both retained our individuality and have encouraged each other in whichever direction we decide to go in. It has also strengthened our bond immensely and we have got to know each other much better and appreciate our differences.

  • How lovely Jackie. I’m coming towards the end of Level 1. I just wish I could present my work as you have. This is my first OCA course, and first venture into the art world for over 50 years. I’m keenly aware that I am actually handicapped when it comes to discussing technique. There’s plenty of food for thought in what you said. Well done you.

    • I, too, didn’t get around to studying art until a few years ago and I can understand how you might lack confidence in discussing technique. The annotation assignments helped me with that as they encouraged me to look closely at the works and ask questions about how the artist achieved his effects. Then I had to go away and find the answers! I hope you are enjoying the course as much as I did.
