Be prepared to get yourself an ‘I heart Vincent’ t-shirt in the Autumn of 2016 as you queue up at your local cinema to watch Loving Vincent.
Loving Vincent is an investigation delving into the life and controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh, one of the world’s most beloved painters, told by his paintings and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death.
Loving Vincent features over one hundred and twenty of Vincent Van Gogh’s greatest paintings. The plot, drawn from the 800 letters written by the painter himself, lead us to the significant people and events in the time leading up to his unexpected death.
Loving Vincent will be the world’s first feature-length painted animation, and is brought to you by Oscar winning film companies Breakthru Films and Trademark Films. Every frame in the Loving Vincent movie is an oil painting on canvas, using the very same technique in which Vincent himself painted.”
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet you are in for a visual treat, it gives me goosebumps and tiny internal squeals of joy everytime I watch it, it is hard to imagine how it will translate into a full feature length film but I for one am excited to find out. A total of 60 painters will work for a year to complete the 57,800 oil paintings making up the film and you could be one of them, work started in January and will continue until August 2016. See here for details.

  • The trailer is quite something and there’s another on the film website. I’m just wondering though whether it will work for a full length film, at least for me. as my eyes kept trying to turn the animations in real people.

  • Wahoo, I was not aware this is going on. Thanks for sharing.
Six weeks training on how to paint like Van Gogh must have been an interesting workshop for the selected few even if they did not end up working on the film.
I wonder what they will do with all these paintings after the animated film is complete. Maybe set up an exhibition and cash in to cover for the crowdfunding that did not succeed?
Can’t wait to see the animation…

  • What a coincidence I’d just watched an item on this film on BBC’s The One Show when this article popped up on my Feedly app. Be interesting to see the finished film.

  • Can’t wait to see this – I’ve been watching clips of the film’s progress on Facebook and the BBC website it looks fascinating and I am intrigued by his story.

  • This was also on The One Show – I don’t usually watch it, honest! But I cannot wait for this to come out, it looks amazing.
