Painting in print
OCA assessor and tutor David Winning really enjoys looking at good work, evident in the way he talks about this student’s work. Richard Farmer is an assured learner: and his results have been achieved through hard graft. Don’t be disheartened by feeling that this student’s work may be better than what you feel you might be able to achieve at this point. This was Richard’s first course (Printmaking) with OCA (he’s now doing the Drawing course). Because OCA courses are open access students’ starting points are very variable. Richard clearly had done a lot of drawing before he started this course. Here, daily sketching and observational drawing provides the cornerstone for composition, technique and design. There is some humility in both the scale and approaches to subject matter here. This is a student who recognises that to truly learn, nothing can replace the task of constantly looking, documenting, reflecting and experimenting with media. Richard shows all the signs of a student with the potential to do well.

It is really inspiring to see something from the printmaking course. I hadn’t realised it is such a flexible way of creating art and I really like the contrast between the solid, strong lines and shapes and the more painterly, tonal techniques.
Beautiful work!!! Really stunning! I love how the lines, textures and shapes change so drastically as the technique changes I found this so inspiring!
I love it. Simple but stark lines, which convey all you need to know to take you into that view. What a fascinating process printmaking is, it’s organic.

This is great! I’m also doing the Printmaking 1 course and really appreciate seeing the work of other people doing the same course.
I can find nothing of Richard Farmer’s work on the OCA website – apart from this video – which is a pity. It would be nice to be able to see more of his work as the course goes on, and to be able to see some of Richard’s own comments on his work, too.
I particularly like the simpler graphic images – beautiful design and fine line.
