Join OCA tutor Michele Whiting on the 23 November in Bristol to visit the RWA Open Exhibition.
This show is based on a highly competitive open submission in its 164th year. It is one of the longest running ‘opens’ in the country, showcasing some of the most ‘exciting (established and emerging) artists in the country.
The ‘hang’ is usually salon style, the work is assessed by a panel of judges and awards made.
There are featured artists every year and this year’s invited artists are international photographic artist Susan Derges and Royal Academician Tim Shaw, renowned for his monumental, and often politically motivated sculpture. The selection panel includes artist and critic William Packer, invited artist Susan Derges and gallerist Danielle Arnaud, alongside RWA Academicians John Eaves RWA, Stewart Geddes PRWA, Stephen Jacobson VPRWA, Mark Prescott RWA and Laurie Steen RWA. (from website)
It is a great opportunity to see an ‘open’ competition and discuss how it works as a mechanism for showing and getting your work into public space. The exhibition would be suitable for all levels creative Arts and Fine Art pathways.
There will be time to discuss submitting works to ‘open’ competitions with the tutor in advance of visiting the show, then we will look at selected works critically and review how that selection might be made. Later we will discuss professional practice issues and ways forward for emerging artists.

  • Students may be interested to know that Stewart Geddes is a visiting Lecturer on OCA’s MA Fine Art. The Visiting Lecturers work in a wide range of media and across all areas of contemporary art and it is good to see Stewart’s work in the RWA exhibition.

  • That’s great! I’ll look forward to seeing Stewart’s work in situ; it’s always a good show, with lots to see and discuss.
