Here’s a peep into the painting world of Stephen Powell, dedicated OCA student, with a tremendously strong focus on his work. He won OCA’s painting prize last year, for outstanding work, demonstrating a huge amount of background research and preparatory studies. It was interesting to see how Stephen balances his day job with the many hours of work he puts into his OCA studies.
Its worth taking a look at some pages from his sketchbooks too, since they provide an idea of how much experimentation Stephen does as he is working on each project. Stephen won ÂŁ75 book tokens from OCA.

  • well done Stephen, a deserved winner, and so good to be able to put a face (and voice) to the work after all this time! I hope you enjoy the next phase of your studies

  • I really like your paintings Stephen, especially the bottom one with all of the rectangles, and it was nice to hear about your experience of the OCA. All the best with it.

  • Hi Stephen,
Having joined the OCA three or four weeks ago now I love seeing these clips of the sort of place I might be with my work in a year or two. Thanks for sharing your sketch book entries. It’s fascinating to see the development behind the finished painting.
Nice work and congratulation on the prize!
    all the best,
    Emma

  • This interview strikes a really lovely tone and Stephen’s point about the importance of one’s attitude both to the work in hand and to oneself as an artist is spot on. Congratulations Stephen.

  • Well done Steven, you deserve it. I’ve been following your work for the last 3 yrs or more and can see that you must put in an enormous amount of time to your studies, which is reflected in your woncderfully expressive paintings, especially Mornington Crescent, I particularly like the old barn so atmospheric, reminiscent of time past and present.

  • A well deserved winner! I just love your work and I’m studying it closer. You are also putting in a tremendous amount of work and effort into your sketchbooks. Something that I need to work on. Thank you Stephen for sharing that. Its a great inspiration.

  • An interesting view, the influence of your experience in architecture is showing through . I particularly enjoy your abstract 3340, I have recently started at level three having completed an HND at college after retiring from many years in social work , and like you I feel I would have preferred to have had a career in art , however I am enjoying the oppurtunity I now have .

  • So refreshing to see such dedication. A well deserved winner. I joined the OCA 3 weeks ago and I’m studying photography. You have defiantly inspired me with the amount of work you put in. Well done.
