Study Visit: Agnes Martin

AR00179_10

Join Sarah on the 24 July at Tate Modern. We will look at the work of Agnes Martin followed by a visit to the permanent collection display at Structure and Clarity; specifically looking at painting through abstraction.

Agnes Martin is perhaps most recognised for her evocative paintings marked out in subtle pencil lines and pale colour washes. Although restrained, her style was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. Martin believed that spiritual inspiration and not intellect created great work. ‘Without awareness of beauty, innocence and happiness’ Martin wrote ‘one cannot make works of art’.
We will look at these works, think, reflect and discuss around the large areas of media. We will consider the aim and aesthetics of the works, how they are contextualised within art history, their relationship to the artists’ paintings, the imagery and the techniques. There will also be an opportunity to talk about similar concerns in your own works, if applicable.
After lunch we shall see a collection of other Abstract paintings where we can make direct observations and comparisons; to be able to contextualise Agnes Martin amongst her contemporary peers and those who were interested in similar concerns either preceding or following him in Art History. For example Vanessa Bell, Minimalism room with Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly and others.
