Study Visit: Hannah Hoch

Hannah-Hoch
German Artist Hannah Hoch was a member of Berlin’s Dada movement in the 1920s, and was a driving force in the development of 20th century collage. As the first major exhibition of her work in Britain, the show at Whitechapel Gallery brings together over 100 works. A determined believer in artistic freedom, Höch explored the concept of the ‘New Woman’, worked with avant-garde theatre and questioned traditional gender and racial stereotypes.
After lunch we will will visit a second exhibition ‘Contemporary Art Society: Damn braces: Bless relaxes’. The show looks at the representation of the English east coast over the past 200 years from the early Norwich Society of Artists (1803–1833) to the progressive Time-Based Art course in Hull during the 1990s. It includes works ranging from John Constable to Grayson Perry. There will also be an opportunity to visit a reshowing of Steve Willat’s exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery first shown in 1979.
The study visit take place on Sunday 9 March and will be led by OCA tutors Gerald Deslandes and Sarah West. Places are free to OCA students, to reserve yours please email enquiries@oca-uk.com

  • This seems good value, the concessionary tickets are £8, or thereabouts, at least that is what I paid! There is a lot of work, over 120 pieces, plus scrap books and other items to look at, I spent about four hours with two other students so gadding off to other exhibitions might be a bit optimistic.
I’m slightly intrigued by the statement about challenging racial stereotypes, given there appeared no evidence to back this up in the exhibition space, in fact a statement to the opposite – which isn’t suggesting for one moment that she was racist in any way, just that she seemed, on the evidence of the work selected for the show, to be more consumed with gender related issues. My blog post about the visit is here: http://umneygm.wordpress.com/2014/01/20/hannah-hoch-at-the-whitechapel-a-three-act-play/ Stan also went, on a different day and his account is here: http://standickinson.com/2014/01/22/one-city-one-and-a-half-days-eight-exhibitions-two-women-and-a-shortage-of-colour/
    Definitely recommended.

  • Gutted—I’m out of the country! Intend getting to it on my own—she is an artist I really admire—along with some other Dada-ists and collage practitioners. Had just written about this approach [very briefly] on my closing entry for TAOP blog: http://vickifoto.co.uk/2014/01/21/end/—it's a direction that really interests me. Can someone suggest any other good texts on her and others? Will buy the catalog though—when I go.

  • I wish I could see this. I can’t recommended her work highly enough. It’s not too much of a stretch to say that had she been a man, the work would sit more centrally in the story of 20th century art. The work would be different of course, because so much of it is about femininity and how women were shown. If you’re interested in re-thinking how the body can be shown/seen then this show is pretty unmissable.

  • Great OCA visit today – my write-up is here.
These study tours never fail to be educational, thought-provoking and fun. I enjoyed a lovely lunch break with tutor Sarah West and student Beverley. It was great to mingle with a different group (although I did miss my OCA Photography pals) and really valuable to think outside of just one medium. Thanks to Gerald, Sarah and Angela and all the students who attended for an excellent day. And of course – thanks as always to Gareth and his team for organizing. Looking forward to the next one….
