Three day Drawing Workshop with OCA in Edinburgh

This is a post from the weareoca.com archive. Information contained within it may now be out of date.

We will be running a three day drawing workshop in Edinburgh from Monday 2nd until Wednesday 4th September 2013 from 10.00am -12.30pm, and 1.30pm – 4.30pm. This will take place at a large studio in Edinburgh.
This Drawing Workshop is an intensive drawing course designed to give OCA students the time and support to make significant advances in their drawing. In this three day workshop led by artists Emma Drye, Jane Mitchell and Olivia Irvine you will work with a variety of materials and approaches to explore different ways to create drawings, respond to various source material- studio set ups, the draped figure – as well as building on ideas, work individually and collaboratively, receiving feedback in the form of individual tutor attention and group crits, and finally investigate your own boundaries of drawing, what it can do and how it can become a greater part of your art practice.
If you are interested in participating please email enquiries@oca-uk.com for a place. There will be a £180 charge to take part.  Accommodation is not provided and places are limited to 12. There is one bursary place paid for by OCA which is open to anybody who feels they have a case (eg through disability or financial hardship).

  • I would really like to go to this drawing class, however the train fair last time to a study day cost me £80 in Edinburgh and then if I have to pay accommodation as well, I am not sure if it would be possible at this point.
So could I go onto a, I want to go if possible list please ? I know it will probably fill up dramatically but never mind.

  • Please note, there is no disabled access. Although the studio is on the ground floor, the toilets are up a flight of steps.

  • This study course sounds really interesting …but living in deepest Hampshire Edinburgh is not very close , it would take all day to drive there and probably even longer by train!! A course with the same aims somewhere in the south not held in London or Bristol would be very attractive.

  • If this goes well, which i am confident it will, then I will recommend other such workshops are run in other parts of the country. I think it is what students want.

  • I’ve booked and I’m really looking forward to this. Although I’m only taking baby steps through drawing 1 at the moment, I’m hoping that some face to face contact with tutors and other students and looking at their work will be a good stimulus. As for distance – there isn’t anywhere convenient for me as I live in Southern Italy! Luckily this falls after one of my weeks working in the UK so I can attend without an additional plane fare.
There’ll be a bit of nostalgia for me too as I was a student in Edinburgh in the ’80s.
Just one question – will we need to bring lots of materials? (I’m thinking of the flight home)

    • Its nice to hear from other students who are planning to attend! And great that Aylish, you’re coming from far away. I’m also doing drawing 1 and should be at project 4 by september if I keep going! So this is really good timing for me.
September seems a long way away at present but I guess it’ll soon be upon us.
And to the others – Edinburgh is well worth visiting and can be a complete inspiration if you’re planning cityscapes.

  • Materials, such as charcoal, ink, paper, erasers and fixative are provided. If you want to bring some of your own, especially coloured media then that would be a bonus. Also bring a sketchbook and a humble pencil or two.

  • I too would love to attend but am currently living in Brighton so will be a very expensive trip alas. I, like Sherry, would be VERY interested in a short drawing/painting course a little further south!

  • At OCA we do try to plan visits and workshops to a range of venues in the country. Keep a look out for more opportunities as they come up!

  • I don’t want to sound like an advert, hope this might be useful info, did you know you can get really cheap deals on megabus from lots of places – London to Edinburgh is £10 each way for these dates in September. I did London, Glasgow, London once for £12 total for 3 of us! Earlier you book the cheaper it is. Also you can often get great rates at Travelodge for a family room sleeps 4 (1 double and 2 sofa-bed singles) under £20 a night if you are lucky- cheapest I got was £9! From someone who never lets lack of money stand in the way of a bit of travel!

    • Thats great. Im sure itll be well worthwhile. We’ll have to write it up to encourage more here in scotland. Its really rather nice here!

  • There is a lot of cheap accommodation in Edinburgh. Jane Mitchell did a search online for a booking of 3 nights from Sunday until Wednesday and the cheapest accommodation at the West End (near the workshop)is The Hostel in Clifton Terrace at £10 per night for a dorm bed. From there it jumps to £38 per night for a single room in the Ardmillan Hotel off Dalry Road and £40 for a Travelodge at Learmonth Terrace, £42 at the Ritz Grosvenor and £50 for Travelodge Haymarket. The Ashgrove House Hotel at Haymarket has twin rooms at £240 for the 3 nights which would mean £40 each per night.
If students want to stay in the city centre (still fairly close to workshop) and have more of a city break, Brodies Hostel in the High Street has dorm accommodation at £11 or £12 per night and the option of booking a twin room for £44 per night. There is also £24 per night for bed in small dorm at Smart City Hostel in Blackfriars Street or a single room at Travelodge St Mary’s Street at £45 per night or in Edinburgh Townhouse in North Castle Street at £50 per night. Best check the internet for deals.
