rarescale Summer School: Bursaries

29 July-3 August 2019

OCASA has generously agreed to make two bursaries of £200 available for OCA students to attend the 2019 rarescale Summer School.

The rarescale Summer School is a week-long residential course for composers/arrangers and flute players, held at Harlaxton Manor in Lincolnshire from 29 July to 3 August. This year, composers will spend the week composing for and working with the advanced flute ensemble, with daily workshops under the guidance of Carla Rees, and an informal end of course performance with the ensemble which will also provide students with an opportunity to record their work. There is also a possibility to work on arrangements of existing music, aligning with the new level 2 Orchestration and Arrangement course.

This year’s course will have only four places available to composers, and places will be awarded on a selection basis. The offer of two OCASA bursaries means that two of these places are being held for OCA students, with the remaining two places open to the general public.

Full course details are at www.rarescale.org.uk, under the Summer School menu.

The fees for the week are £475 for students including accommodation and food. For successful bursary applicants, this cost will be reduced to £275 for the week.

rarescale is a registered charity no 1112917.

To apply for the bursary students are requested to submit a formal proposal for consideration, outlining the project they intend to work on during the week and explaining how attendance at the summer school will enhance their creative practice and compositional skills. The proposal should include details of OCA courses studied and a summary of experience. Applications are invited primarily from music students but this is not a pre-requisite; we would also welcome applications from students with a background in other disciplines interested in exploring practical music-making with a live ensemble. This could encompass directed improvisation and work with graphic scores in place of traditional musical notation. Feedback will be provided on each of the proposals received, to assist with future applications.

Applications should be sent to Carla Rees by Monday 20 May.  Successful applicants will be notified by 1st June and all remaining course fees are due by 30 June.

Please contact Carla Rees for any further information. carlarees@oca.ac.uk
