As a youngster who liked to make as much noise as possible, the violin was a natural choice for me when we were allowed to learn an instrument at school. My mum suffered years of squeaky painful torture-by-strings before you reach that bit where people actually want to listen to you play.
What I enjoyed most though was playing my own harmonies alongside someone else’s tune, and even now if I’m singing along loudly to the radio I sing a harmony rather than the main tune. In fairness, sometimes I sing the instrumental bits rather than the actual lyrics but who doesn’t like to be a guitar every now and then? No? Just me?
Perhaps composition is your thing too, and with a distance learning Music degree centred upon practical work, you should definitely take a look at our courses if so.
Student feedback on our composition courses was so positive that we had to develop a degree, and with students now working their way through it, it provides a real opportunity to those who want access to flexible study without compromising on the practical elements of the subject.
You do need to have a certain level of music theory study to study the degree, but with open access at the heart of everything we do, we have also developed a Foundations Music unit which will, among other things, help you to learn music theory to around Grade 5 standard (ABRSM / TCL) if this isn’t something you have already.
For those who want to, there are opportunities for peer interaction via workshops and the OCA New Music Collective. Whilst not mandatory, this access to other musicians, collaborative working and even hearing your own compositions up close is a fantastic experience – all while fitting your studies around your existing commitments and in-car solos!
As far as distance learning degrees in classical composition go, this is the only one of its kind in the world so if this is what you’ve been looking for, don’t ‘fret’ – you can stop looking and start studying.
