An audience with Tom Hunter
This is a post from the weareoca.com archive. Information contained within it may now be out of date.
We are very pleased to announce that Professor Tom Hunter will be giving a talk for OCA students on 2nd March in London.
Woman Reading a Possession Order by Tom Hunter.
There will be space for 25 students to attend with the event being filmed so that a wider audience can benefit online.  We will be meeting at the gallery Bootstrap Company in Dalston, London at 10.30am where Tom has some work on show (Public Spaces, Public Stages) and will give a presentation of his work for us, with emphasis on the role of documentary and photographic art in his own practice.  There will then be an opportunity for questions followed by an informal time of mingling.
This is an exciting opportunity to engage with an inspiring established artist. Tom’s practice is based around issues of fact and fiction, often drawing on stories from the local press and people from his community of Hackney as inspiration. Â He portrays real life with all it’s grittiness, in a powerfully dramatic manner.
Tom Hunter is Professor of Photography at London College of Communication.  He is the only person to have had a solo photography show at the National Gallery, where his work was also recently part of the exhibition Seduced by Art. His work has been exhibited worldwide including Saatchi Gallery, White Cube and Serpentine.
His new book ‘The Way Home’ has just been released and is currently available here.
All places are free to OCA students. Â To book please contact the office on enquiries@oca-uk.com.
I really like Tom Hunter’s work and am very excited about this – what a fantastic opportunity!! Thank you!!
Please note the change of venue – this is to coincide with an exhibition of Tom’s work so we can see the work and then go to a meeting room for the talk and question time. Thanks.
I’ve just now seen the change of venue only through reading these comments. May be worthwhile sending out a note to all attendees?
Thanks Brian – it will all be in the joining instructions anyway!
What are the possibilities for watching it online? Would love to follow this!
Hi Leonie
Not this time I am afraid, but we are looking at the possibility of videoing some aspects of study visits and workshops in the future so that that more students can share in the experience
For those attending (and probably for those who aren’t) here’s an interview with Hunter http://www.photomonitor.co.uk/2013/02/the-way-home/
Thanks for that John it’s very timely.
Just a quick note—will do a proper write-up in a few days. But this was one of the best OCA visits; and I’ve done a few of them. To hear an artist talk about his images, his thought processes, inspiration, working practice—and then to be able to ask questions afterwards was really really rewarding. Thanks to Sharon and OCA for organising this—really hoping there are more to come!
I’ll be writing more in a day or so but wanted to join with Vicki in thanking Sharon for organising this. I really enjoyed the talk and Tom Hunter is certainly very inspirational. Yes – please can we have more of such events?
I’d like to say thanks to Sharon for hosting this event, to which I’d like to echo the sentiments of Vicki and Catherine. Here’s my thoughts on the event.
I am also very grateful to Sharon and all at OCA who made this visit happen. Hunter was very generous in his engagement with us and it was a very worthwhile visit.
Thanks a lot for all the effort Sharon, like all the others I found this very inspirational and would love to have more events like this.
My write up is here
This was my first study visit with the OCA and a very enjoyable, thought provoking experience.
Thank you to the OCA for the opportunity and a big thank you to Sharon for organising the study visit.
