Oil (re)visited

On Saturday 26 May, one week after the Photographers’ Gallery re-opens, Jose Navarro will be leading a study visit to the first exhibition in the newly revamped Soho site. ‘Oil’ by Edward Burtynsky is a must-see show as the detail in Burtynsky’s large scale photographs can best be appreciated by seeing it on the wall, but also because of the topic matter.
Burtynsky is on record as saying: ‘In 1997 I had what I refer to as my oil epiphany. It occurred to me that the vast, human-altered landscapes that I pursued and photographed for over twenty years were only made possible by the discovery of oil and the mechanical advantage of the internal combustion engine…These images can be seen as notations by one artist contemplating the world as it is made possible through this vital energy resource and the cumulative effects of industrial evolution.’
While it is clearly the first time that the OCA has run a study visit to this exhibition, it is the third time that WeAreOCA has covered this body of work and there is a short video worth watching here.
The study visit will start at 11am and will last about two hours. We expect this to be a popular visit, so will try to expand places to allow all students who want to attend to come. To book your free place email enquiries@oca-uk.com

  • Would love to come along to this but will be preparing for the arrival of 25 people at my house for a Eurovision party 🙂
Look forward to reading all the blog posts about this.

  • I already applied for this & was told it was full but that I was on the waiting list. It now says Places Available, but no one has been in touch with me to offer a place. It is rare that I can get to the UK, but this is one time I can so please can someone let me know. i know I have already been to my first study visit, but this will probably be the last time this year I can make one.

    • Sorry Linda, it is a mistake. thanks for pointing it out
The study visit is fully booked. We do have you on the waiting list and will contact you if anyone cancels. We have corrected the list.
