Paying it Forward

A few months ago we appealed on the E-Bulletin for volunteer photographers to get in touch with Prostate Cancer UK to offer up their skills. Landscape student John Walker decided to get involved. He carried out his first assignment at the Saxon Cycle event in June.

“In early May this year I answered an appeal for volunteer photographers which was in an OCA Weekend E-Bulletin. I was put in touch with Patrick Regan, the Volunteer Management Co-ordinator, who sent me some information about the charity and what would be required of me. He also sent an outline of the technical style and requirements for the charities publicity material. I agreed to cover any events in East Anglia within about 70 miles of my home.
At the end of May I received my first assignment brief to cover the Saxon Classic 2015 Cycle Rally based in Ipswich. This was a great fun day for cyclists and family alike and raised a lot of money for the charity.
From my point of view I really enjoyed the atmosphere on the day and meeting the other volunteers who were helping with all aspects of the rally. All the cyclists seemed really happy to have taken part and were all up for having their pictures taken at the finish.
The experience helped me with my photography as well. It increased my confidence to work systematically and in a very fast changing public environment; but I also really got a buzz from knowing I had played my small part in helping the charity. I am looking forward to my next assignment/challenge”
