I am grateful to tutor Derek Trillo for drawing my attention to this great lighting assignment from Art of Photography student Tim Dunk. In addition to some fabulous images Tim shared some of the detail of how he achieved the results on his blog
setup
It is also good to see that while Tim is self critical in his assessment of his work, he is not without a sense of humour

  • What an inventive mind! The blog was also interesting in showing how the exercises can be followed in spirit rather than to the letter and bring about some very interesting results.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog post Tim; following your thinking and seeing the results which are so creative. I think I’ve fallen in love with that giraffe! All the best for the next assignment.

  • Ditto all the comments above. Well done, I thoroughly enjoyed the results; and your dedication. Also clk55pete’s comment about how you interpreted the brief instead of sticking to the letter and producing something that meets the brief exactly, but brings little of yourself to it. You chose the right option!

  • In the TAOP 3rd assignment feedback I stress the importance of the choice of subject for ‘lighting’. The right subject can make it easier to create interesting work and to motivate completion of the assignment. After the initial idea, Tim clearly had his imagination fired by the possibilities.
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the images; you can imagine how it felt seeing them one after the other as I scrolled down (gobsmacked) .. is it real or stuffed? I did request a disclaimer at the end …no giraffes were harmed etc. I’m still waiting, with RSPCA’s number in hand
