Ways of Looking
The ‘Ways of Looking’ photography festival opens in Bradford on the 1 October. Exploring the theme Evidence, the festival includes a extensive range of exhibitions and events including premières of newly commissioned works by internationally renowned Magnum photographer, Donovan Wylie and Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller, early work (1972-1987) by Daniel Meadows, the ‘Tableaux Vivants’ of Red Saunders, an exhibition of photography on the festival’s theme of Evidence in the Pop Up Gallery and a number of other exhibitions in the city.
DONOVAN WYLIE: The Magnum photographer explores photography’s relationship to surveillance at the National Media Museum where there will be a Q&A session and book signing from 10.30 to 12.30 am on Saturday 1 October. It is necessary to book places at this event and the OCA has ten places reserved.
DANIEL MEADOWS: A major retrospective of this photographer’s work along with some work only recently discovered in his archive. There will be a Q&A session and book signing from 10.00 to 11.30 am on Sunday 2 October in the National Media Museum. It is necessary to book places at this event and again the OCA has ten places reserved.
JEREMY DELLER The Turner Prize winner has created a new exhibition ‘Poking About’ in the Bradford 1 Gallery especially for the Ways of Looking festival drawing on the photographic archives of the Bradford Museums.
RED SAUNDERS exhibits his striking Tableaux Vivants (‘Living Pictures’) in the Impressions Gallery on Britain’s struggle for democracy and equality. This first major solo exhibition features three dramatic new works.
‘CASE OPEN’ is a photographic exhibition responding to the theme of Evidence in the Pop Up Gallery which is adjacent to the Impressions Gallery
The Impressions Gallery and Bradford 1 Gallery are in the same building and are adjacent to the Pop Up Gallery in Centenary Square which is situated about 500 yards away from the National Media Museum.
In addition to the Q&A sessions, above, a study visit for up to 20 students to all the exhibitions is planned for Tuesday 4 October, as follows:
11.00 am: Meet at the impressions Gallery for an introduction by Indya Nealing to the exhibitions of Jeremy Deller and Red Saunders and an art work commissioned for the gallery by Douglas Gordon. After the talk and discussion there will be time to visit the exhibitions and see the Pop Up Gallery nearby.
1.00 pm: Break for lunch.
2.00 pm: There will be an introduction to the exhibitions in the Media Museum by Greg Hobson, photography curator who will be known to students who have visited the gallery previously for his insightful observations. You are free, afterwards, to spend time in the exhibitions and if desired to visit other areas of the Museum.

The Q&A sessions and the study visits are free. There are no refreshments provided as part of these events. There are restaurants in Centenary Square and the National Media Museum and your own lunch can be consumed in the Impressions Gallery. Tutor Alan Whetton will be at the Q&A session on Saturday and at the study visit on the Tuesday together with Gareth Dent. The Q&A session on the Sunday is unaccompanied.
Love Donovan Wylie and Daniel Meadows work and will be heading to Bradford for the exhibitions in October.
Just a quick note – Daniel Meadows talk at BJP Vision 2011, in London, 18th November. I will definately be attending that one.
