We have learnt a lot in the last two years…
Two years ago, one of our External Examiners said ‘why don’t you do study visits, it would be a great way to network students’. We thought it was an idea worth trying and after two tentative visits in London and Birmingham, we launched into a full weekend at the 2010 Brighton Photo Biennial. We thought it was a success, the number of attendees was limited in numbers but not in quality (Isn’t that right Eileen and Keith?) and so we carried on.
Two of the most important things we learned were:
- Allow enough time for people to schedule visits into their diaries, and
- Accept that not everyone has Jose’s superhuman levels of stamina.
So, here we go again. We will be at the Brighton Photo Biennial for the weekend of 3 and 4 November – i.e. the final weekend. We are not ready to announce the arrangements, but it is going to be worth coming, just look at the website. We will be publishing a further post later in the summer once we have got the team together and worked out a schedule. We are committed to making this a great weekend and everyone who wants a place will be able to attend, even if it means doubling up visits. So you can start negotiating with partners, booking hotel rooms (it may be worth travelling on the Friday and staying two nights) and generally getting excited.
Two years since my first study visit – how time flies! This looks really fascinating and is in my diary.
It’s in the diary.
Study visits are wonderful things, a chance to meet like minded people and look at original work, share thoughts……
It would be good to arrange something a little bit further north – there are a lot of us up here and some good galleries. Side gallery in Newcastle is a gem, especially for soc doc photography.
I agree about the Side Gallery Geoff. One of the challenges in arranging study visits is keeping track of what is on at all the possible venues. Too late to plan a study visit unfortunately, but the current exhibition, The National Womb, is worth seeing.
Looking forward to it already.
Count me in….was a great event last time around.
We, as students, have also learnt a lot … !?
I live in Brighton and am in the middle of my first assignment for TAOP. I will definitely want to meet others coming to the photo biennial. It’s going to be a good one. Loads of great work going on and a very exciting atmosphere already developing. Brighton is going to be buzzing … every venue is pretty much booked up.
I went on my first Study Visit today to Oxford and it was so worthwhile. I felt like I was part of a student community which make a huge difference to me.
So bring on the Brighton Photo Biennial … can’t wait!
I tried writing on this the other day but my comments were not added via the moderation for some reason. I can’t recreate the comments but in essence I was saying that I live in Brighton, can’t wait to join other students for this and that the town is buzzing – every space has been pretty much taken up with the photo biennial which is so exciting!
Any more definite plans on Brighton yet? I’ve booked my hotel room—waiting for a weekend of fun, inspiration, thoughts and fun! Notice fun features twice—it’s been a while since I’ve been out!
I would love to go to Brighton, but I have other arrangements for that weekend.
I’m looking forward to a study visit this coming Monday in Edinburgh. It’s not photography, but it is art (Symbolist Landscape In Europe) and of course other artistic perspectives are helpful.
I missed the reference to my ‘superhuman stamina’ the first time I read this post. Mind you, I spent the week after the show in 2010 in a semi-comatose state…so tired! jajajajaja (Spanish laughter…we laugh with a ‘j’) It was well worth it though. Happy to do the same this year.
have details gone out yet because I have not seen anything yet?
Have you booked?
Details went out on 29’th of october – there was another post on the 31’st!
Yes I booked by email weeks ago I also spoke to Clive last week
I would try asking Leanne then …
