This exhibition looks at the visual language of Soviet posters, prints and photographs from the October Revolution to the death of Stalin. It shows how in the first ten years Soviet designers created a revolutionary narrative that linked the events of 1917 to turning points such as the storming of the Bastille and Delacroix’s image of Liberty Leading the People. The exhibition is particularly relevant to students studying the OCA Visual Studies course.
The exhibition as a whole enabled us to see a range of work from the strongly contrasting lino cuts to the super fine cobwebbby weave of some of the lithograph work which had been even further smoothed over and refined with sandpaper and crayon.
Within the context of postmodern critical theory, the primacy of television, and the rampant culture of commodification sweeping America, artists like Bickerton endeavoured to reframe the practice of art production in response to the new, seductive mechanisms of desire at work in society.

There are hundreds of smaller galleries across the country showing a wide programme of work. They may feature local/regional artists or show touring exhibitions. It is well worth getting frequented with the galleries in your local area and subscribe to their mailing list to keep up to date.
I was about to start a three-year academic commitment. In applying to be part of the Open College of the Arts 2014 cohort for Europe’s first distance part time Masters in Fine Art, I had signed up to deadlines and being a student again: a proper one (not the kind who says they are a ‘student of life’ and winks in an alarming way). I’d have an NUS card, discounts in Top Shop and more two-for-one pizzas than I could ever consume . What else would I learn? What had I to gain?
Saturday morning at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art was the time and place for the Open College of the Arts study visit to the Joan Eardley ‘A Sense of Place’ exhibition. With fourteen students this was a well-attended event, the participants being attracted to an exhibition that focused on drawing and painting enhanced by photographic and archival documentation of the period.

A few months ago we blogged about the [(6)] – six alumni photography students who have come together again to create a new body of work. This work shot in Oxford, England and exhibited in Oxford, Canada. To add further interest to an already exciting event the Oxford Riverside Gallery was set up by one of OCA’s MA students Mathew Aldred.
About half-way through Georgia O’Keeffe’s exhibition at Tate Modern I began to wonder if, perhaps, the Tate ought to have promoted the show as a group exhibition since it included so much work by other artists…
At the opening of the new extension to Tate Modern there was a small notice next to one of the exhibits. ‘Due to expected visitor numbers’, it read, ‘the macaws have temporarily been returned to their owners.’ Given the quality of the other works on show, it is unlikely that this caused much disappointment to visitors…
